「スノードーム」の続き。作文の課題部分と、作文例は次のとおり。
課題文:おじさんやおばさんは、ぼくをおばあちゃんの家にひきとったほうがいいと言った。子どもは新しい学校にすぐになれるからって。でも、おばあちゃんはそうはしなかった。
作文例1: Uncles and aunts said I should be raised at her house, because kids would soon get used to the new school. But she didn't accept the idea.
作文例2: My uncle and aunt said to my grandmother that she had better to live with me in her house. That's because most children could become familiar with any new school. But she didn't follow their advice.
作文例1のように、"Uncles and aunts"と、無冠詞複数形を使うと、世の中の「おじさん、おばさん」全般を指すことになる。前に所有格代名詞の"my"をつける必要がある。
作文例2では、"My uncle and aunt"と単数形だが、日本語からは複数のおじさん、おばさんがかかわったことなのかどうかはわからない。単数形でも、複数形でもどちらでもありうる。
作文例1で、"get used to the new school"と、定冠詞を使っているが、これでは、ある特定の学校に、子供全般が慣れることになってしまう。
また、ここは一般論なので、時制を現在のままにして表現する。
作文例2の"A become familiar with B"は、「AがBについて、知識を深める、扱い方に慣れる」という意味なので、対象が学校のような環境に適応するという意味ではない。
作文例1のように、"get used to"または、"become accustomed to life in" とする。
作文例
My uncle and aunt said that grandma should take me to her home and take care of me there because kids can get used to a new school soon. But she didn't do so.
