英語圏における、clockwise/counterclockwiseとright-hand(ed)/left-hand(ed)の関係の混乱の一例が、ニュージーランドの植物学者の用語集に見ることができる。
この学者のサイト上で閲覧できる用語集のdextrorseの項目には、次のような記述がある。
Dextrorse: twining in a clockwise, right-handed direction
Dextrorse dek’strors adj.(L. dexter: on the right hand side, to the right)

dextrorseといのは、右巻きの意味で、right-handedと同じ意味で使われるのだが、この説明に添えられたツタの画像を見ると、ロープやネジで言うところのleft-handedのラセンパターンになっている。
つまりこの植物学者にとってのright-handed directionというのは、ツタの生長方向である鉛直方向の真上から、下のほうに視線を向けた時に観測される、ツタの先端が回転して成長していく様を表していると理解できる。
