植物学者の理解の仕方とは違うのが、その他の分野の科学者たちの考え方だ。

Helices can be either right-handed or left-handed. With the line of sight along the helix's axis, if a clockwise screwing motion the helix away from the observer, then it is called a right-handed helix; if towards the observer then it is a left-handed helix.
引用した部分を簡単に日本語で言うと、ラセンをその軸方向に見て、時計回り(clockwise)の方向にラセンをたどってみて、ラセンが遠ざかるように見えれば、それがright-handedで、逆に近づくように見えれば、left-handedのラセンであるとしている。
これは、植物学用語集で引用した説明と、まったく逆になっていることがわかる。
日本では、アサガオのツルの巻き方に関して、牧野と木原、どちらも植物学者同士の論争となったが、英語圏では、植物学者vs.その他分野の学者という対立の構図があるのかもしれない。
Century Dictionary and Cyclopediaという百科辞書には、植物学者の見方を「きわめて不自然」として、次のように批判している。
In botany, of twining plants or circumnutating parts, properly, rising or advancing in the direction of a right-handed screw or spiral, or that of the hands of a watch. Certain authors, neglecting the notion of forward growth and conceiving the plant as viewed from above, have used the term in the opposite sense, which is quite unnatural.
しかし、植物の成長を観察するには、上から観察するのが自然で、上記の批判のように、成長方向に視線を向けるということのほうがはるかに不自然だ。
アサガオのツルの観察の場合だと、朝顔が生えている株もとのところに顔を持ってきて、そこから、上を見て観察しろといっているわけで、そんなことをしても、アサガオのツルの回旋運動など観察できるわけがない。
