｢つばめのつんちゃん｣の英作文の7回目。
課題箇所と作文例は次のとおり。
課題文
ひろみせんせいは、ボール箱にわたをしいて、ひなを入れてあげました。それを、巣の下のたなの上におきました。すると、親つばめはちゃんと気がついて、箱のひなにもえさを運んできました。見守っていたサリーちゃんが、ほっとしたようにいいました。
訳文1
Hiromi-Sensei spread cottons in the box and put him in it. She put it on the shelf under the nest. Then parent swallow noticed the baby swallow and fed its little ones.
Sally-chan who was gazing at it said relieved to tell me.
訳文2
Hiromi-Sensei put the little bird in a cardboard box with cotton padding, then set the box on the shelf just under the nest.
Its parents became aware of it and began to feed the chick. After seeing the event, Sari said to the young bird.
訳文1は初出の｢ボール箱｣のことをいきなり、"in the box"とした。あらかじめ、言及しておかないと、定冠詞のついた"the box"では何のことか分からない。
訳文2の"with cotton padding"は｢綿を詰めた｣の意味に取れるが｢綿を敷いて｣とは若干違うと思う。
原文どおりの順番にひろみ先生の行動を表せばそれで良いと思う。
｢巣の下のたな｣の部分は，どちらの訳例も同じ，"the shelf under the nest"としている。
"shelf"はこの話では初出だが、定冠詞を用いている。
なぜかと訳文の作者二人に聞いてみたところ、一人はその後に、"under the nest"が続いているからと答え、もう一人は雰囲気でと答えた。
最初の答えがほぼ正解に近い。
"shelf"に後ろから前置詞句の"under the nest"が対象を制限していて、対象がひとつしかないことを表している。
英和辞典では、｢後方照応的｣という語句で表される使い方だが、ここで注意しなければならないのは、後ろから限定句が付くと必ず、定冠詞を使うと誤解している人がいることだ。
この誤解は、制限用法の関係詞の先行詞には必ず、定冠詞を用いるという誤解と同じで、結局は普段の生活で英語に接していないため、冠詞の使い方を十分に分かっていないことの証。
定冠詞、不定冠詞のどちらを使うかは状況しだい。
ここでも、"a shelf under the nest"が成立する。しかし定冠詞の場合とでは、意味が違う。対象がひとつしかないのか複数あるうちのひとつかという意味の違いがある。
日本語では，こういうことを重視しないが，英語では，いつも厳密に違いを表現しなければならない。
