今回の課題部分と実際の英作文の例は次のとおり。
課題文
「ちょっと待って、わけがわからないよ。説明してくれないかな」
亜美は心を決めていたと見えて、こくりと頷いた。
「あなたって、何でも自分に都合よく解釈するんだよね。ポジティブな人って、付き合うと結構疲れるよ。だって、言葉の裏にある恐れとか悲しみとか、全部無視してるんだもの」
訳文1
"Just a minute. I have no idea. Give me more information."
Ami seemed to be prepared and nodded decisively.
"You are always hopeful and confident. Positive-minded people like you sometimes make others tired. They tend to be superficial, ignoring others' feelings, fears or sadness, behind the words."
訳文2
"Wait a minute. I cannot make out what you are driving at. Will you explain it?"
Sha gave a nod, which seems to have made up her mind to do it.
"You are the person who understands everything to be good for yourself. Associating with a positive sort of person makes me quite wear out. After all, the person forgets everything such as fear, sorrow in the back of words.
「わけが分からないよ」の部分を、訳文1は"I have no idea."にしている。
この表現は何かについて知識がない，または見当がつかないことを表している。"I don't know."と言い換えられる。
訳文1の"I have no idea."の部分を"I don't know."に置き換えると、しっくりこなくなる。
それは、何に関して知識がないのか，見当がつかないのかが不明だからだ。
こういう状況でよく使われるのが"I don't understand what you're talking about."という決まり文句。"don't understand"を"have no idea"でも、同じ意味で使われるようだ。
「説明してくれないか」の部分は、どのことについて説明を求めているか明確ではない。日本語では、問題なくても，英語だとその事が問題になる。
訳文2は、その部分について"it"という目的語を置いたが、それが何を指すかが英語としては不明確。
こういった点をはっきりさせないと英語としては舌足らずのものになる。
「何でも自分に都合よく解釈する」という表現は、相手を少しも褒めていない。
訳文1の表現だと、褒めているようにしか聞こえない。
また、"positive-minded people"はいわゆる「ポジティブ人間」という日本語を英語に訳したつもりなのだろうが、「ポジティブシンキング」と同じで、和製英語。
英語の"positive"は、「肯定的」という意味なのだが、この「肯定的」がいつの間にか「楽観的」と混同され、「ポジティブ人間」とは物事を楽観的に受け取る人間のことになっている。
課題文でも、亮平はそうしたタイプの人間ということで，「あなたのようなポジティブな人」と亜美は呼んでいる。
「何でも自分に都合よく解釈する」は訳文2のような"understand everything (to be) good for you"では表現できないと思う。
「何でも深刻に受け取る」というのは，"take everything seriously"というが、その逆の表現がなかなか見つけられない。"take everything easily"が使えそうだが、検索でのヒット数は多くない。
"can't take anything seriously"がネットでの検索で一番ヒットしたもの。
「付き合うと疲れる」は、文字通り、肉体が疲労するという意味ではないので，"tired"や"wear out"をそのまま使うと、別の意味に取られかねない。"mentally tired"というように、副詞をつけるとよい。
訳例ではまったく別の表現を用いた。
訳文2の"You are the person who..."の部分は、関係代名詞の制限用法というのをよく分かっていない文の典型。
訳例
"Wait a minute. I don't understand what you're talking about. Could you explain why you say, "I can't put up with you."
She nodded firmly. She seemed to have decided what to say beforehand.
"You can't take anything seriously. Going out with an optimistic man like you gives me a lot of stress. After all, you pay no attention to other people's fellings in the back of their words like fears, sorrows or others."
