「グレート・ディクスター」の続き。
課題文と、作文例はつぎのとおり。
課題文: 15世紀に建てられた館を背景に、様々な表情が楽しめる庭園です。館へ伸びる約60㍍のボーダー花壇(通路や壁に沿ってつくる帯状の花壇)は特に素晴らしく、訪れるたび、その色合いに魅せられます。
作文例1: The manor house built in the fifteenth century has lovely gardens which are made against the background of the house. You can enjoy various aspects of the gardens. Especially, an about sixty-meter-long border garden stretching to the house is splendid. By the way, a border garden means a linear one being built along a walkway or a wall. You will be bewitched by the coloring of the garden every time you visit.
作文例2: Vistors can enjoy the garden with a variety of views and the house built in the 15th century in the background. The about-60-meter-long border flowerbed leading to the house, a swath of a garden made along paths and walls is particularly wonderful. Its color combination always attracts us.
作文例1は最初の文の主語を"the manor house"にしている。原文では、庭園が話題の中心で、その前の文も庭園に関する記述なので、英語の文の流れから言えば、ここは、庭園のほうを主語にすべきところ。
文の構造が複雑なので、原文を二つの部分に分割したのは、一つの方策だが、ここはそうしなければいけないほど、複雑な構造でもない。
作文例2は、最初の文の主語をvistorsにしている。ここも、先の文からの流れから言うと庭園を主語にするほうが英語としては流れが良い。受動態を使うか、または庭園を主語にした表現を考える。
「様々な表情」は庭園のことだから、expressionの代わりにaspectやviewを使ったのはいいと思う。expressionはもっぱら、人間の顔の表情のことだからだ。
「約60㍍の」の約をどちらもaboutで表している。作文例2では、ハイフォンでaboutもつないだが、こうした表記はネットの検索では見つけることができなかった。
「約」という表現を英語ではあまり重視しないようで、「約〜メートルの…」というような表現のときに、aboutをつけることはしないようだ。そもそも、その長さが大体の目安でしかないからだ。
「特に」の部分を作文例1では、文頭にespeciallyを置いて表現したが、文頭に置く副詞、これを文修飾の副詞というが、副詞なら何でも置けるわけではなく、especiallyに分頭用法があったかどうか。手元の英和や、ネット検索でも、そうした使い方は見つからなかった。
この文脈で文頭で使う、副詞または副詞句は"above all"だろう。
「訪れるたびに…魅せられます」はこの筆者自身のことだろうから、ここもIを主語にしたほうがいい。
ところで、課題文の中の「ボーダー花壇」は、英訳例で"border flowerbed"とした。
英辞朗を検索した結果だが、これを検索語にして、検索しても、英語のサイトでは全くといっていいほどヒットしない。作文例1の"border garden"にしても同じで、庭園における"border"とは、gardenと何か、またはgardenとgardenとを仕切るためのもので、単に"border"と呼ぶようだ。
原文に忠実に英訳しても英語としてはややおかしなものになってしまう例だ。英訳例2で、なるべく原文に忠実に、且つ英語としてもおかしくないものをあげておく。

Above all, the sixty meter long boarder flowerbed stretching to the house is especially wonderful: a boarder flowerbed is a band like one made along a path or a wall. I am fascinated by colors of the flowers every time I visit there.
