前回引用した石毛直道のエッセー、英訳の第一回目。
原文: 若いタレントが出演するテレビの食べ物番組を見ていて、気がついたことがある。どの番組でも、出来上がった料理を試食する時になると、定型化した表現が現れるのである。
料理を口にしたとたん、かならず「ウーン!」という感嘆詞を発するのである。
訳文1: I find something on TV which young popular personalities are on. They express their regular emotion when tasting dishes in each TV program. They always say impressively, "Mmm!" when having a bite.
訳文2: I sometimes watch TV programs about food where young popular TV personalities appear. While watching those programs, I noticed something stragne. On each program, they always say the same word on their first bite or sip of the dish cooked there. The moment when they start trying the dish, they express their feeling with an exclamation, "Mmm...".
第一文目。分の表現に不備、不正確なところがないように思える。しかし、これを英訳するには、いくつか気を付けなければならない点がある。
まずは、「タレント」という言葉。この言葉の意味するところは、芸能界で生きる人たち全体を指すともいえるが、歌手、あるいは俳優というように、所属するカテゴリーがはっきりしている人たちに対してはあまり使わないように思う。
漫才師などの演芸場を活躍の場としている場合だと、芸人と呼ぶことが多いようで、結局、タレントと呼ばれるのは、歌手でもなければ、俳優でもなく、芸人というカテゴリーでも括れないが、TVのバラエティー番組などに出てくる人たちのことを言うようだ。
英語でこの種の人たちを表すのは、TV personalityが適当のようだ。
次にあげるのは、某英会話学校のHPにあった説明。
A celebrity is a famous or well-known person, especially someone in show business.
A TV personality is someone who becomes a celebrity because they often appear on TV. They are usually interesting, funny, unique, or just likeable, and appear on variety shows, talk shows, etc.
Be careful! We do NOT use the word “talent” like the Japanese タレント to mean TV personality.
talentという単語をこの文脈で使うのは間違いだとわかる。
次に、「食べ物番組」という言葉。タレントがレストラン、食堂などの食べ物の店に出向いて、その店の品を実際に食べて、紹介するというような番組のことだろうと思う。
別の言い方だと、「グルメ番組」。
さて、それを表す英語は。「料理番組」なら"cooking show"でいいだろうが、「グルメ番組」という言葉に相当する英語はどうもなさそうだ。
ディスカバリーチャンネルに「アンソニー世界を喰らう」という番組をやっていたが、英語の番組名には、それらしい表現はなかった。説明的な表現にするしかなさそう。
単語の問題はこれで片付くが、もっと厄介なのは、この文の時制をどうするかだ。
「…を見ていて、気がついたことがある」を、直訳的に過去進行形と、過去形を使って、"When I was watching a TV program, I found that..."とやると、見ていたテレビ番組で気がついたことだけに限定されそうだ。
ところが、気がついた内容は、グルメ番組の多くに共通する事項だから、ある一つのグルメ番組だけに当てはまることではない。
となると、時制を替える必要がある。訳文2はそのことに気が付いて、上記のような表現としたのだろう。
訳例では、いくつかのグルメ番組を見たあと、あることに気がついたという過去事実として訳してみた。
「〜見ていて」の部分を、習慣的なことと考えれば、使う時制も異なる。たとえば次のような訳例でもいいと思う。
"I watch several so called gourmet programs in which young TV personalities appear and I've found a fact about them."
訳例: I watched several TV programs in which young TV personalities visited a restaurant, a dinner or whatever and introduced dishes served there, and I've found a fact about the programs. The fact is that those people use a stereotyped expression when it comes to trying the food served for them. They never fail to groan, "Mmm", as soon as they bite it a little.
